Ways to Improve Your Mental Health


Since we discussed what mental health is already, we can now look at ways which we can improve our mental health. These steps (when applied) will help boost your mood, and will definitely pay off in every aspect of your life which of course will lead to a very happy life.

In no particular order,

1. Love Yourself: This point cannot be over-emphasized, we must learn to value and love ourselves, this is the very prominent factor as this guides in everything we do, everything else revolves around it, treat yourself with kindness and respect, spoil yourself and give your self credit when due, speak kind words to yourself(if you are artistic enough, compose love poems for yourself). We must understand that self love is the ability to see yourself as a flawed individual and still hold yourself in high regard.

2. Exercise: The mind and the body are intrinsically linked, when you improve your physical health, you will automatically experience greater mental and emotional well being. Exercise helps release endorphins, powerful chemicals that lift your mood and provide added energy, it can relieve stress, improve memory and help you sleep better.

3. Manage stress: ‘’Is this even possible?’’, you may ask as life itself is stressful, stress affects us a lot, our physical, emotional and mental health) so it is important to keep it under control. While not all stressors can be avoided, stress management strategies can help things back in balance.

4. Eat right: An unhealthy diet can take a toll on your brain and mood, disrupt your sleep, sap your energy and weaken your immune system. Foods that adversely affect mood are (and not limited to) caffeine, alcohol, foods with high levels of chemical preservatives or hormones, sugary snacks(God go help us o), refined carbs, fried food e.t.c. Our bodies differ, so try as much as possible to eat what is right for your beautiful body.

5. Sleep Well: Getting enough sleep is a necessity for a good mental health, skipping hours of sleep here and there can take a toll on your mood(I can testify to this,I'm usually really moody when I lose sleep) energy, mental sharpness & ability to handle stress and over long term, chronic sleep loss can wreak havoc on your health and outlook(don't lose your beauty sleep my darlings).

6. Do what makes you happy: Everyone derives joy in doing something, some people ignore what makes them happy cos it doesn’t pay bills, remember that your happiness is key and indulging in activities that make you happy is ideal for a good mental health, whatever it is; painting, singing, photography, you name it. JUST DO IT

Note that if whatever makes you happy is detrimental to you or anyone else, please do not, I repeat DO NOT INDULGE in such activities, also seek professional help ASAP

7. Avoid toxic environment: Be it a friend, colleague, place of work or even family, do well to run away from anything that steals your peace and joy, No negative vibes biko.

8.Speak out! Feeling low, please speak out, it is normal to sometimes feel bad and unmotivated (yeah, it happens to the most of us) however it is important to speak to a TRUSTED friend or a professional, such as a counselor, don’t bottle up for your sanity. We all need someone to vent to and that is okay.
